Japanese Knotweed is quick growing herbaceous perennial plant, growing at speeds of 10cm a day. The plant was first brought to the UK as an ornamental plant but actually originates from East Asia in places such as Japan, China and Korea, although it has been classified as an invasive species in a number of countries across Europe.
The plant spreads rapidly via the underground stem (rhizome), as opposed to the spreading of seeds which is more common to this country. A section of the rhizome the size width of your finger tip can produce a new plant in just ten days, and they have been known to grow up to a metre in just one month.
